Rhème

In Grammar of production (of text), the rhème , is a new element introduced into the stated, generally by a indefinite Déterminant; in opposition to a topic which is a known element of the statement, generally introduced by a definite determinant.

Example:

Yesterday evening I met a woman. The woman challenged me.

*Dans the first proposal a woman is the rhème (COD). Let us note the indefinite determinant " une".

*Dans the second proposal, a woman became The woman (Prone), the definite determinant we indicates that it is about a woman whom one knows. The woman is well the topic.

Two processes of constructions of sentences use this concept: the thematisation and the rhematisation.

The rhematisation consists in making carry the rhéme by the prone and the topic by the predicate:

  • It is Paul who gave me this book.

In this example, new information is the fact that it is Paul and not another who has acts. The subject is thus here the rhème (or matter).
