Populated by the Ambilâtres, Gallic People Armorican, Rezé was an important port on southern bank of the the Loire and a meeting place and of trade between the various Celtic tribes of the area (Vénètes, Namnètes, Ambilatres, Andécaves and Pictons).

The country of the Ambilâtres, disputed between Pictons, Namnètes and Vénètes was attached by the Romans at the time of the conquest of Gaules in thanks of the assistance brought by Pictons in the combat carried out against Vénètes, populates most powerful of the West of harbor quoted Gaule.Cette is indicated thereafter by Ptolémée, and by Strabon as located at the extremity of the territory of the Pictons, it will become possession of Aquitaine and Poitou during the collapse of the Empire.

At VIesiècle, Adelfius, successor of Hilaire, “bishop of the Church of Pictons” reside in the basilica of the Fields Saint Martin's day de Rezé. The borough of Rezé, Raciate Vicus, becomes the refuge, under franque protection, of the bishop of Pictons when Poitiers is subjected to the Visigoths which adopted the heresy arienne.

In IXesiècle, vis-a-vis the raids Vikings, the Low-Poitou is organized in military stronghold under the name of county of Herbauges in order to protect the coast poitevine (Bouin has just been destroyed by the Normands). Rezé becomes the capital of the county of Herbauges.

About the middle of IXe, after several victories of the Breton troops, ordered by Nominoé, over the Francs and the Norman ones, part of the country of Herbauges is attached to Brittany then in the County of Nantes, new capital of the Breton kingdom.

In 851, the Treated of Angers between Charles the Bald person and Nominoé definitively officializes the integration of Rezé and the grounds of the south-Loire to the kingdom of Brittany.
