It lost the February 16th 1900 the 474 hectares of Toussieux become common and finds kind with the fifth rank. For the population, it arrives clearly at the third rank after Trévoux and Jassans-Riottier in 1975.

Like its neighbors Massieux, Parcieux and Trévoux, it juxtaposes the alluvial plain of the the Saone (in fact fill of convex bank of a broad meander) with the slopes mollement flattened of the coastal one.

Its village is with semi-slope, but the communal territory does not stop with the edge of the plate dombist, because it includes a rather vast sector around the old parish of Pouilleux become simple hamlet. This part is drained by the brook of Flat-bottom flow of the Morbier, therefore under affluent of the Formans. Another brook, the Talançonne, resulting from Coastal, from goes away directly to the the Saone. Reyrieux is besides a country very rich in sources, resurgences of water of the plate.

One notes like limits, in the west Trévoux, the south the the Saone and the commune of Parcieux, in the east Civrieux and Rancé, in north Toussieux, Holy-Euphémie and Saint-Didier-with-Formans. The secondary road 933 furrows the low part of the village, at the accesses of the hamlet of Port-Bernalin or set the industrial activity from time immemorial. The railway Sathonay-Trévoux removed today, passes in lower part of the village at an average altitude of 171 meters. With semi-slope, secondary road 4 F Neuville - Trévoux, curves through the old village, of the Trève d' Ars with Balmont, or it joined secondary road 6 arrival of Villars-les-Dombes and secondary road 4 arrival of Meximieux by Saint-Andre-with-Corcy.

History

Called respectively “Rariaco”, “Reyriaco”, “Rayreu”, “Rairieu”, in the past, this parish appears for the first time in a charter of 981.

In 984, its church formed already part of the possessions of the Church of Lyon.

A Guichard of Reyrieux is mentioned in 1096 like benefactor of a priory. In 1186, Etienne II of Villars gave to the Abbey of the Île Beard what it had in Reyrieux. It left a girl, Agnés, who, married to Etienne de Thoire founded thus the House of Thoire - Villars.

In 1226, there were in Reyrieux a field of Villars and a Farmhouse called Saint Martin. A Jean de Veyssieux is quoted in an act on this date: he yields to Guichard de Frans, Chevalier, various grounds, curtils and possessions with Reyrieux.

At the end of the 14th century, Humbert II of Thoire - Villars frees the “mainmortables” from Reyrieux, whose goods were withdrawn from the transfer tax (NB: The inhabitants of Reyrieux were “mortmain” and of “serf condition”).

In 1402, the last Thoire - Villars, Humbert II, sell her grounds of Dombes with Louis II of Bourbon. It is the beginning of the Principauté of Dombes.

A derivation of the brook “talençon”, which gave its name to the inhabitants of the village, with fact of turning of the mills during several centuries (see mills) it was of a great utility for the irrigation of the meadows, made at certain periods of the year and “regulated hours”

The Castle of Robillon, Hamlet of Balmont, had 1672 with 1780 by Junior by Garnerans, was the seat of the high Court of justice of Dombes. The enclosing wall goes back to 1772.

The Castle of the Brush, is set up in 1735 by the Duc of Maine, Souverain of Dombes, in favor of Jerome Duplessis, Ecuyer, Maître of the Requests at the Parliament of Trévoux. In 1770 it belongs to the family Bellet de Tavermont which made it demolish in 1872 to make place with the current castle.

Already, at the 12th century, the hamlets were called:

  • Coste of Chateauvieux

  • Farmhouse Martin
  • Farmhouse of Veyssieux
  • Farmhouse of Provinger
  • Farmhouse of the bray

At the 18th century, other hamlets are quoted:

  • Balmont

  • the Heathers
  • the Cave
  • Horned
  • Herbevache
  • Pollieu
  • the Rock
  • Sands
  • Holy Sorlin (or there was a vault)

At the 13th century, Reyrieux was crossed by two roads of great communication:

They were furrowed by diligences. With Balmont, there was a relay of station with an inn and a blacksmith. In 1750, the inn was used as den with famous the brigand Mandrin (it would have hidden spoils with the foot of the one of the oaks in the rise of Balmont ..... This explains can be the sudden richness of some families!!!). Toussieux was a hamlet of Reyrieux until in 1900.

With the top of the slope of Balmont, begins the Plain of the Heathers, theater in the year 198 of a terrible battle between Septime Sévère and the Proconsul Albinius. There would have been 300.000 combatants.

At the full time of the agricultural revolution of the 19th century century, towards 1850, Reyrieux remained an important rural community (cereals, vineyards, hemp, walnut trees). Three mills with corn, an oil press functioned on the brook of Talençon. In 1859, one redécouvrait the Ferrugino-sulfurous source formerly exploited by the Romains; a little later, one was to raise a Hôtel of Water.

Fifty years later, the day before the Great War, the agricultural life remained the essence of the activity, with the appearance of colza, of corn, the retreat of hemp and the development of the breeding like everywhere in Dombes. The weekly market of Thursday was very animated; the village which had preserved its artisanal activities and its retail business, had already many middle-class residences or the families of the Lyons middle-class came to spend the beautiful season.

Until the accesses of 1960, Reyrieux remained a large calm village, a little " vieillot" , then came a kind of movement from urbanization going up of Lyon, with the establishment of new companies in the alluvial plain.

In 1986, Reyrieux became the chief town of the 43éme canton of the department of Ain.
