Rexism
the rexism was a political movement of Extreme-right-hand side during the first part of the 20th century in Belgium. It is the Belgian counterpart of the Fascisme in Italy, of the Phalangisme in Spain or of the Garde of Iron of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu in Romania. The rexism was founded in 1930 by Leon Degrelle, a French-speaking Belgian . The name comes from the Latin slogan Christus Rex , “Christ is the king”, who was also the name of a publisher Catholique and preserving. The rexism finds its bases with Leuwen.
The ideology of Rexisme
The Idéologie of the rexism called with the moral revival of the Belgian society in agreement with the lesson of the Roman Catholic church, by forming a company supporter of corporatism and by abolishing the Démocratie. The movement rexist attracted supporters mainly among the French-speaking Wallons and Belgians. In parallel, another movement of Extrême right-hand side developed in Flanders: the Vlaamsch-Nationaal Verbond (VNV). Among the most influential members of the party, there was of course Leon Degrelle, but also of other personalities such as Jose Streel, Louis Collard, Victor Mathys. This last will be chief of the movement when Degrelle fights on the Front of the east.
History of Rexisme
Rex is established as a party in 1936, year when it obtained twenty and one seats with the Chambre of the representatives. Very quickly after the come to power of Adolf Hitler in Germany, it started to be combined with the German interests, to incorporate a Antisémitisme style Nazi in his program and to receive financial aids of the supporters Third Reich.After the beginning of the Operation Barbarossa, the Legion Flandern and the Légion Wallonia - two Belgian paramilitary organizations - sent respectively 405 (August 6th 1941) and 875 volunteers (August 8th 1941) to fight the Soviet troops .
After the fall of Third Reich, Degrelle flees towards the Spain of the generalísimo Francisco Franco. He was judged for Trahison towards Belgium and was condemned to died by Contumace, but the requests formulated in Spain for the to extradite were rejected. Degrelle died in Malaga in 1994.
Hergé, the author of famous the Cartoon Tintin , is known to have had sympathies towards the rexism, as its most serious biographers point out it, in particular Benoît Peeters and Pierre Assouline. Hergé, which had become acquainted with Degrelle when this one was journalist with the magazine Catholique reactionary it XX E Century , illustrated the cover of a work of this one, Histoire of the school war .
The thought rexist is however not extinct and of the movements such as the Front of Youth of it are the first heirs.
To the rexism is attached what one called in Belgium the royal Question and which made lose its throne with Léopold III (see Lilian Baels).
