Rex is a Race of European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus , resulting from a change spontaneous Génétique. It is small a domestic Mammifère , about the lagomorph S and of the family of the léporidé S.

Birth of the Rex race

In 1919 is born at Mr. Caillon, farmer in the the Sarthe, a young buck rabbit with the brown and duveteux hair whereas it is resulting from gray rabbits. In the following range a female presents the same mutant characters. The consanguineous crossing gives rabbits all to fluffy fur, i.e. very dense and made up excusivement of undercoat.

The abbot Waistcoat, priest of the village, put themselves to raise them with great difficulties. It names the new race “Rex rabbit”, that is to say rabbit king in Latin:

  • Orylag ®, to name the fur which recalls to that of the Chinchilla.
  • Rex of Poitou ® to name the meat appreciated for its gastronomical qualities.
