Revolution of the pinks
The revolution of the Pinks (Géorgien: ვარდებისრევოლუცია, vardebis revolutsia ), peaceful revolution in Georgia, led to the resignation of the president Edouard Chevardnadze on November 23rd, 2003.
It belongs to the “Révolutions” known as coloured (supported by the occident and singularly the the United States), of which the others are: the original Revolution in Serbia in 2000, the Orange revolution in Ukraine fine 2004, the Revolution of the Cedar to the Lebanon and the Revolution of the Tulips to the Kyrgyzstan, these two last in 2005.
Edouard Chevardnadze controlled Georgia since 1992, it was president since 1995. Its government was accused of corruption threatening the economy of the country.
Electoral frauds are denounced by international observers at the time of the parliamentary elections of November 2nd, 2003. The candidate Mikheil Saakachvili proclaims victorious elections, which confirms then the surveys independent at exit of the ballot boxes. He invites the population to express peacefully against the government of Chevardnadze. The principal parties of opposition support Mikheil Saakachvili and claim the behavior of new elections.
The demonstrations against the government begin mid-November with Tbilissi before extending to the main cities from the country. November 22nd, 2003, the opponents carried out by Saakashvili, carrying pink , stops a session of the Parliament and forces president Chevardnadze to leave the building. Edouard Chevardnadze proclaims the state of emergency, but the army does not follow it. November 23rd, 2003 at the evening (the day of the George Saint), after a meeting with the chiefs of the opposition Saakashvili and Zourab Jvania, he announces his resignation. Nino Bourdjanadze, president of the Parliament and member of the opposition, becomes president of Georgia by interim. The supreme court of Georgia cancels the result of the parliamentary elections. The organized anticipated presidential election on January 4th, 2004 devotes Mikheil Saakachvili to the presidency of Georgia. March 28th, 2004, its partisans largely gain the parliamentary elections.
