Review criticizes ideas and books

The Re-examined of the ideas and the books (1908-1924), re-examined critical Political and Literary French semi-monthly impetus in April 1908 by the editor Jean Rivain and the literary writer and critical Eugene Marsan.

Orientation of the review

Of inspiration maurrassienne, it is, before the First World War, word of the neo-classic school and the literary Nationalisme carries it. It is also close to the ideas Syndicaliste S and néo-royalists developed by the Cercle Proudhon, then animated by Henri Lagrange and Georges Valois. Federalistic, it strongly supports the movement of decentralization and rebirth of the regional identities which appears at the beginning of the XXe century.

Of a great literary quality, gathering the fine Nationalist flower of the writers S, the critical Revue has a wide influence quickly. She dialogs with the Nouvelle French Review , which launch at the same time André Gide and Jacques Copeau and which also militates she for a traditional rebirth . She makes countryside against the Romantisme, the “Bovarysme” (concept launched by Jules de Gaultier), the declining fraction of the symbolism and the theater in vogue.

Defense of the classicism, praise of Stendhal, promotion of the Romance school and the whimsical school

Savagely attached to Stendhal, it defends the idea of a open Classicisme, alive expression of the French genius. Accommodating a large variety of literary tastes, it supports the rebirth of the regional literatures as well, by making a broad place with the poets of the Romance school, Maurice of Plessys, Raymond of Tailhède, Ernest Raynaud, Lionel of Rieux, that the whimsical young person school represented in its columns by Paul-Jean Toulet, Francis Carco, Jean-Marc Bernard, Tristan Dérème, Tristan Klingsor, Jean Pellerin and Leon Vérane. At the time of the campaign conducted by the French Action against the ideas of Henri Bergson during the year 1914, the principal organizers of the review refuse to choose between their fidelity with Maurras and their admiration for Bergson and the review then takes its distances with the movement maurrassien.

The review publishes several special issues devoted to Richelieu, Rousseau, Stendhal, Mistral, Moréas and Barrès.

Writers

The drafting of the review is touched hard at the time of the first world war: seventeen of its young writers, is more third of its manpower, are killed or reported missing. The survivors start again the publication in 1919, but the new political context and arts person are not really any more carrying. The group disperses in May 1924 to join the universal Revue , recently created by Jacques Bainville and Henri Massis, which expresses a more traditional line maurrassienne, or other reviews of mobility royalist ( Cahiers of Occident, Latinité, the Revue century )
