Rev counter

A tachometer or rev counter is a Measuring instrument making it possible to indicate the Speed of rotation of a part moving. The sensor can be mechanical, optical or with Eddy current.

As its name does not indicate it, the rev counter does not add up the turns of the engine, but account the number of revolutions per unit of time (generally of the turns per minute).

One usually finds it in industry and transport, where it allows a control and a monitoring of the rotary machines.

Nowadays, much with Automobile S and Motocyclette S is equipped with it: they indicate to the driver the number of revolutions of the crankshaft. In a car, one very often just finds it behind the stealing, sometimes in the center of the Instrument panel, in any case quite visible of the driver or the pilot.

The driver makes use of the indications of the rev counter to change report/ratio of Gear box at the most convenient time, while avoiding putting the engine under or on-mode. On-mode is visualized by a zone painted in red.

A tachometer is also used on the camera with film to check the number of images a second.

Clock industry

In Clock industry, one calls tachometer the graduated dial allowing to determine a mean velocity as from time put to traverse a distance given (in general 1000 meters), on some watch S.
