Reusel
Reusel is the chief town of the commune of Reusel-In Mierden, in the province Dutchwoman of the Brabant-Septentrional . At January 1st 2006, Reusel had 8.157 inhabitants.
Geography
Reusel is located in the south of the Netherlands, near to the Belgian border , with the crossroads of the roads which connect Tilburg to Mol and Eindhoven with Turnhout. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, Reusel was still relatively insulated, because of its situation in periphery of the Netherlands, in an area of moors and forests, without axis of communication.To the west and the south-west of the borough a height extends zandrug --> which separates the Bassin pouring Meuse from that of the the Scheldt. Just apart from the borough, towards the stage, the source of the Reusel is, which runs towards north while skirting the village in the west. In the east of Reusel one finds the Raamloop which forms part of the border with Bladel. Since the south-west of the commune leave several Ruisseau X, which constitutes Affluent S for both Nèthe S.
Variations and localities
The principal hamlets of Reusel are Lensheuvel (, integrated today in the village), Voorste Heikant, Achterste Heikant, Kattenbos, Kippereind and Weijereind.
History
Reusel belonged a long time to the Abbaye of Postel. In 1140, the knight Fastradus van Utwich (or van Uitwijk) made donation of all its possessions of Reusel with Postel.In 1850, Reusel had 860 inhabitants, including only 140 in the borough even.
Reusel was an independent commune until January 1st 1997, date of its fusion with the commune of Hooge in Lage Mierde.
Etymology
Some old forms: Roselo , Rosole , Roesele . Several etymological explanations exist, but the most probable etymology is a composition of raus (gotic reed ) and ilo ( brook ), is brook with the reeds . According to this explanation, the hydronyme Reusel would be older than the toponym.
Economy
Until the beginning of the 20th century, the activity of the village was exclusively agricultural. In 1853, Reusel counted 24 shepherds and 733 more sheep.At the beginning of the century appeared number of factories of cigars, installed in this area for its labor still relatively cheap. This industry brought an additional income for the inhabitants, and it especially made it possible to disenclose the commune, by the construction of the line of Tramway Eindhoven - Turnhout.
Today, there are always many farms, a little industry and the tertiary sector. Reusel-in Mierden also likes to be presented in the form of common green, trying to attract many Dutch tourists for active holidays in the countryside.
Monuments and curiosities
- Notre-Dame Church of the Assumption , built in 1895, after the demolition of the Romance church of XIIe century. The church has a Orgue famous organ builder Loret.
- the Shepherd ( De Scheeper ), statue to celebrate the memory of the many shepherds of the village.
