Retro-acronymie

The retro-acronymie is the fact of interpreting a word like a Acronyme, whereas it is not one in the beginning, or then of giving a new direction to an existing acronym. Postal and telecommunications authorities, “Station Telegraph Telephone” becomes “Small Quiet Work”; the RATP: Régie Autonome of Parisian Transport can be also read Sitted Reste Are paid to You or Rentre With Your Feet. Interpretation obtained is named retro-acronym .

To build retro-acronyms is a form of Word game, often pleasant, used like satire of the marks. One can also build retro-acronyms to give a direction to an expression which did not have any at the beginning but seemed to be an acronym. For example S.O.S was selected like signal hazard warning because easily recognizable in Code Morse, then reinterpreted Save Our Souls (“save our heart S”) or Save Our Ship (“save our ship”).
