Rethel

Rethel is a common French, located in the department of the the Ardennes and the area Champagne-Ardenne.

Its inhabitants is called the rethélois.

History

Its foundation would be due to Jules César which would have established there its camp One reads in the life of Saint Arnould, bishop of Metz, that Cyriaque, his/her father, and Quintienne, his mother, gave to Saint Remi, bishop of Rheims, all that they had in villa Reistete , to obtain to sky a son of his prayers.

In 1814, the Spanish prisoners of war import the Typhus in Rethel. Jean-Baptiste Riberotte-Labesse lavishes his care with the soldiers who are reached. In 1832 and 1849, the Choléra bursts in Rethel; in 1839, it is the Typhoid fever which makes enormous devastations with Barby, deaths amounted per about thirty each day.

City council man since 1830, to advise district, assistant with the mayor during 20 years, general adviser to the war.

In 1869, Mr. Riberotte was named mayor of Rethel.
