Retable of the ten thousand martyrs

The Retable of the ten thousand martyrs is a table of wood Polychrome of the 16th century, which is in the Saint-Pierre church, of Crozon (department of the Finistere, area of Brittany).

Realized in oak carved by artists of the area, work represents martyrdom by crucifixion of Christian soldiers on the Mont Ararat in Arménie, in 120 after Jesus-Christ. Following a revolt of Armenian populations against the Roman occupation, an army of sixteen thousand soldiers is sent, but forwarding turns to the rout. Thousand men only remain new to fight. According to the legend, a Ange ensures the victory to them if they convert and adore true God. Their made conversion, they gain the battle triumphantly. Pressed to sacrifice to the gods of Rome, they refuse and affirm their faith in true God. They are put at the torment, but none disavows, on the contrary; shaken by their courage, thousand legionaries join them in martyrdom and convert. They are finally crucifiés.

This retable is appeared as a triptych with twelve panels to the center and two side shutters of six panels each one. It is classified movable history since the October 11th 1906.
