Resident (colonialism)
At the time colonial, a resident was the official representative of a colonial power practitioner a indirect government. It was in general a diplomat or a soldier. The resident lived and worked in the small autonomous political entities, protectorates or the states on which the colonial power exerted its sovereignty. Its role was that of an political adviser detached near the local sovereign. It acted as ambassador of its government, but on a lower protocolar level, because the European nations regarded the indigenous states as inferiors.
In Tunisia, during the French protectorate (1881 - 1956), the official representative of the French government carried the title of Résident general of France to Tunisia.
The same function could carry a different title, such as " agent politique" or, at the British, resident to commission .
