Residence of the Pines
The Résidence of the Pines is the current residence of the Ambassadeur of France to the Lebanon. It is located at Beirut, the hippodrome and of the park of the Pines
Built initially in 1915 to be used as casino, it was used like Hôpital, then like military circle during the First World War. It is in 1918, whereas Lebanon passes under French mandate after the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire, that the French representative moves into the buildings of the " Residence of Pins".
In 1919, the High-Commissioner of France the Général Gouraud carries out the installation of the buildings, while taking as a starting point the residence of the general Lyautey with Rabat. It is since the residence that the Gouraud General proclaimed the State of Large Lebanon on September 1st 1920.
In 1921, the French State becomes purchaser of the residence and several high commissioners follow one another it. Charles de Gaulle placed in July 1941 and August 1942 there.
With the independence of Lebanon in 1943, the residence became officially the embassy of France in Lebanon.
During the Israeli bombardments of 1982, the Residence of the Pines was used as hospital of countryside of the French Army then of general headquarter of the international observers.
