Reserved Seats (Lebanon)

All the seats of the Lebanese Parliament are reserved with the majority of the denominational minorities of the country.

This distribution is inspired by the Othoman period and the French mandate.

The national Pacte in 1943 envisaged the denominational division of the Parliament with 54 Chrétiens (30 Maronites, 11 orthodoxe Greek , 6 Greek catholics, 4 Armenian apostolic, 1 Armenian catholic, 1 Protesting and 1 another Christian), and 45 Musulmans (20 Sunnites, 19 Chiites, 6 Druzes). In all, that made 99 deputies.

To put an end to the civil war in 1989, the Accord of Taef is signed. One needs as many Moslems as Christians, i.e. 64 each one.
