Reserve national fauna of Niginganiq

The national reserve of fauna of Niginganiq (also known under the name of national Reserve of fauna of Igaliqtuuq ) is a Canadian protected area Nunavut dedicated to the safeguarding of the boreal Baleine. It is about the first sanctuary devoted to the conservation of this species.

Creation

In February 2007, the negotiations between the Government of Canada and the communities Inuit S of Nunavut were concluded in order to supplement the implementation of the protection of the Baie Isabella of the Île of Baffin. This bay accommodates at least 300 specimens of boreal whale, and is the principal site where it is nourished before the winter. This agreement was required since 1982 by the inhabitants of Clyde River and the world Fonds for nature. The government of Canada will provide 8,3 million dollars over 7 years to manage the site, to develop tourism and to carry out archaeological excavations. Inuit will be able to carry out " traditionnelles" activities; as hunting on the protected site.
