Reserve national Andean fauna Eduardo Avaroa

The national Réserve of Andean fauna Eduardo Avaroa in Bolivia is a vast protection zone of the nature of: 7000 km ², located in the Department of Potosí, with borders of the Argentinian and the Chile. It is managed by the Servicio Nacional de Áreas Protegidas Bolivian or SERNAP .

Its coordinates are 66º57' 00" - 67º58' 05" of western longitude, and 22º00' 00 - 22º56' 00 of southern latitude.

General information

  • Situation : the Reserve is in the south-west of the Département of Potosí, more precisely in the Province of South Lípez. It is frontier territories of the Argentine and Chile.

  • Surface : it has a surface of: 714745 hectares (: 7147 km ²), equivalent to that of the French department of the Yonne.
  • Altitude : its average altitude is of: 4000 meters.
  • Climate : The climate is very dry in winter (from May to August). There are rains during the season of summer (from December to April). The average temperature is only of 3°C and precipitations annual averages are about 65 Misters the lowest temperatures are recorded during June, May and July.

Characteristics of the protected area

The reserve is located in an area at the irregular relief including/understanding of broad plane extents and the plates or mesetas, flanked in the west by the volcanic cord of the Western Cordillera. More the good example is the Volcano Licancabur. Also the volcano Uturuncu.

Hydrography

In the zone, one finds hydrous lagoons or spaces, the such Laguna Verde and the Lagune Colorada, which find their origin in the dessication of paléo-lakes or old lakes. Their food is ensured by small rivers (ríos) resulting from the cast iron of glaciers and sometimes born in sources.

Flora

The vegetation is characterized by the important presence of pastures of Graminée S (paja faced) which is found on many plane extents. At the places of greater moisture one meets seedlings of Thola (tholares) and in the rock falls (between 4.300 and 3.700 meters), the Keñua sometimes associated with large cushions with Yareta.

Fauna

Fauna is characterized by very particular species which adapted to the extreme conditions of life of this area, some of them in danger of extinction.

There are three species of flamingos which constitute the principal attraction of the park, the Flamingo of the Andes, the Flamingo of Chile and the Flamingo of James.
