Reserve fauna of Northern Ferlo

The Réserve of fauna of Northern Ferlo (RF) is a natural reserve of the Senegal located at the south of the basin of the Fleuve Senegal, between Linguère and Matam.

Like the Reserve of fauna of Southern Ferlo, it belongs to the sylvo-pastoral zone of the Ferlo.

History

It was created on March 21st 1972 by the decree n° 72.237.

Geographical characteristics

Altitude is lower than 100 everywhere Mr.

In this climate of the type sahélien, the landscapes are of type Steppe and shrubby Savane. Among the plant species, one observes Bombax costatum , Pterocarpus erinaceus , Combretum glutinosum , Acacia Senegal , Balanites aegyptiaca or Boscia senegalensis . However the Désertification has not ceased progressing for a few years.

The territory is crossed by several seasonal rivers, of which the Ferlo which gave its name to this zone.

Fauna less and less abundant and is varied. It is especially rich in birds. One counts there more than 180 species such as the terrestrial Calao ( Bucorvus abyssinicus ), the greater bustard Arab ( Otis arabs ), but also of many raptors as well as forty species of migrating songbirds Paléarctique S, like the Circaète Jean-le-Blanc ( Circaetus gallicus ) or the ashy Busard ( Circus pygargus ). Ferlo was the only place in Senegal where still Autruche S ( Struthio camelus ) in a wild state lived, it is not certain that there still remains about it. As in other protected areas of Senegal - for example with the Reserve of Guembeul - the tortoise Geochelone ( Sulcata geochelona ) is present.

Among the mammals - rare - appear in particular of the Gazelle S of the type Gazella will rufifrons and Gazella dorcas . One also tries the algazelle reintroduction of Oryx and of gazelles rammed.

Tourism

The reserve visits December at June.
