Research institute for the development

The Research institute for the Development ( IRD ), is a French public corporation depend on the Ministère S of the Recherche and Coopération, replacing the Office of the scientific research and technique overseas (ORSTOM).

This organization takes part in scientific research and techniques by the means of agreements signed between the France and certain countries in the process of development.

These research programs are directed around the social sciences (human Géographie, Sociologie…), of sciences of health (infectious illness, great endémies, nutrition, environment) and of sciences of nature (hydrology, pedology, geography, ichtyology…) and are also intended to bring an development assistance of the countries concerned.

The IRD, based with Paris, is present in many countries in the form of centers or of missions locally established, where researchers expatriates are present, but also of the local personnel. The IRD is present in particular in Black Africa (Burkina Faso, Senegal, Niger, Ivory Coast…), but also in Asia (Vietnam, China, India…), in South America and Central America.

History

Created in 1944, known initially like Office of the colonial scientific research (ORSC), then until in 1999 under the name of Office of the scientific research and technique overseas (ORSTOM), the Research institute for the Development is, since 1984, a French public corporation in scientific and technological matter.
