Republican guard (France)

The Republican guard is a force of gendarmerie ensuring of the missions of honor and safety the profit of more the high ranking authorities of the France. In 1978 it gives up the name of the Republican guard of Paris acquired in 1870.

Organization

The Republican guard belongs to the French National police. 3200 men and women compose it (on a total of 105000 in gendarmerie). Intrinsically bound to Paris, the guards carry the armorial bearings of the city (nave) on their uniforms.

It consists of two regiments of infantry and a regiment of cavalry. A regiment is ordered by a colonel and has a Staff.

Great battles

The Republican guard was distinguished in many great battles of which DANTZIG and FRIELAND in 1807, ALCOLEA in 1808, BURGOS in 1812 and INDO-CHINA in 1945 and 1954.

Currency of the Republican guard

The Republican guard not having any bond with the imperial guard, it is false to indicate that its currency is the same one ( the guard dies but does not go ). Currently, the only symbolic systems used by the Republican guard are those relating to Paris and the national police.

" The Republican guard has a popularity which exceeds frontières" , it contributes " with the radiation of the armies Frenchwomen and of France" (Minister for Defense, October 2002)

Missions of honor

The honors are returned mainly by the 1st regiment of infantry, the regiment of cavalry and sometimes by the 2nd regiment of infantry.

Detachments of the regiment of cavalry reinforce them two regiments of infantry in their missions of honor and of safety in the palates of the State. The prestigious hosts are accommodated on the perron of the Elysium or of Matignon (or in other places) by riders with foot. These riders belong to the regiment of cavalry and not at the infantry whose mission is to take care of safety of these palates and the authorities. Certain services of honors (guards of honor) are rendered at the time of official visits in the museums or the opera or at the time of descent of the academicians under the cupola of the Academy Frenchwoman.

Formerly, one could rent Republican Guards for the private fashionable evenings but this possibility was removed by Giscard d'Estaing.

The Republican guard is with the service of the State, which explains suppression in its name in 1979 of the reference to Paris. The Republican guard of Paris became under the president Giscard d'Estaing Republican guard.

Missions of service

The main mission is the safety of the governmental authorities (President, Prime Minister, ministries, assembled main road and Senate). It also ensures of the services of order in particular in the solid masses foresters (regiment of cavalry) or at the time of exceptional demonstrations.

Some guards are assigned to more specific missions:

  • Diplomatic bag enters the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the airports.
  • Safety of the Tour de France (squadron motorcylcist)

Special missions

One of the missions much more discrete of the Republican guard is the transport of bodies intended for transplantation. The squadron motorcylcist is charged to ensure transport of it in order to guarantee the safety of this invaluable cargo and his delivery in time and hour at the various hospitals of the Paris region. For this purpose, it assists in its Biomedicine agency (Seine-Saint-Denis) and carries out some 600 escorts per annum.

The Regiment of cavalry

The regiment of cavalry includes/understands more than 500 soldiers and civilians of which a growing number of women (a little more than 8%). It is about the greatest formation assembled in the world. It has approximately 550 horses (11% of mares) and remains the last unit with Cheval of the French Army.

The regiment is composed:

  • of a center of instruction (Goupil district in German Saint in Bush hammer),

  • of three squadrons of cavalry (first is based with the district of Célestins and the two others with the Carnot district),
  • of a squadron except row (based in Célestins) and composed:
    • of the brass band of cavalry,
    • of the marshal-shoeing,
    • veterinary service.

This unit has a section of high level sportsmen, in particular Hubert Perring, champion of France of Dressage in 2005, member of the team of France for the world equestrian Jeux of 2006.

The regiment of cavalry presents four recoveries:

  • the Carousel of the lances;
  • the House of Roy;
  • the Taken again tandem;
  • the Taken again of the twelve.

The squadron motorcylcist of the Republican guard ensures in France mainly the following missions:

  • to escort the President of the Republic and the Heads of foreign States in official visit.

  • to escort the high ranking authorities of the ministry for defense, as well as foreign military delegations in official visit.
  • to take part in the safety of the runners and the whole of the people present on the Tour de France.
  • to ensure in the car, 24:00 /24 in Ile de France, the urgent transport of bodies to transplant, in source or bound for the airports, of the stations and the Parisian hospitals.

Orchestra of the Republican guard

depending staff, this formation is composed of two great units:

  • the Orchestra of harmony (80 musicians)
  • the String orchestra (40 musicians), likely to be presented in configurations to 24 or 12 bows, or in string quartet

It was founded in 1848 by Jean-Georges Paulus.
