Republic of the Councils of Munich

The republic of the councils of Bavaria ( of Bayerische Räterepublik ) or of Munich ( of Münchner Räterepublik ) was an attempt to transform the République of proclaimed Bavaria in November 1918 into a socialist State in the form of a democracy of councils. It lasted of the April 7th to the May 2nd 1919.

It corresponds to a second phase of the Révolution of November, which had seen the fall of all the monarchs of Germany the previous year. By the primacy given to the working councils, the Republic of the councils of Bavaria took as a starting point the movement of the Soviet S during the Russian Révolution, and of the ideas and actions of the leaders spartakists of the Communist party of Germany (KPD), Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg.

The brutal repression of the army and the Irregular forces put an end to it. The principal leaders were shot.
