Republic of Montmartre
The Republic of Montmartre is born, one evening of winter 1920, under the initiative of the draftsman humorist Joe Bridge. In front of an audience made up of Adolphe Willette, Open Jean-Louis, Francisque Poulbot, Maurice Neumont, Louis Morin, Maurice Millière, Jules Depaquit, it proposes, vis-a-vis the invasion modernism without limits in arts, to create a movement reactionary peacefully and to found " The Republic of Montmartre".
May 7th 1921, R.D.M.dépose its statutes In 1923, Lucien Boyer, chansonnier, compose the text of the official anthem of the R.D.M., the recording of “Goes up there-to known… you will see Montmartre! ”, is done the same year with the management committee of the R.D.M. Disque engraved in 1923.
Poulbot
After having set up the dispensary which ensures health, hygiene, food and clothing with its kids, Poulbot and its friends can offer moments of joy and dreams to them. For that of 1921 to 1931 they organize " Trees of Noël". These festivals, with spectacles and gifts, take place with the Moulin-Rouge, the Moulin of the wafer or with the Cirque Medrano. The small patients of the Bretonneau hospital are not forgotten.
Festivals of the Republic of Montmartre
Among the most famous festivals organized by the R.D.M. with the profit of the deprived children let us quote the Carnival of Granville in 1923, the festival of Fratellini in 1924, the Ball Polin in 1925, the Station of Montmartre in 1931, the Festival at the village in June 1932, the Ball of the Guy of the Nostril in November 1932. Also let us point out the Principal Festival which takes place in 1929, festival which leads to the more good example of the safeguard of the sites. Indeed, being opposed to a real estate project denaturing the pastoral spirit of the places, Francisque Poulbot, Romain Delahalle and their friends of the Republic of Montmartre create, with the angle of the streets of the Willows and Saint-Vincent, an green area, called Square of Freedom, intended for the children of the Hillock.
Vines
Inaugurated with ostentation, this space of plays and joy will unfortunately not hold the attention of the municipal authorities… What to make of this ground, certainly saved promoters, but without precise destination? Is born the surprising idea then, if obvious to plant vines today, there! It is only into 1933 that the Free Commune of Montmartre, under the aegis of its mayor Pierre Labric, decides to make succeed this project with the active support of Poulbot and the Republic of Montmartre. The vine stocks reappear on the Hillock. It is in 1934, that the first “modern” grape harvest in the presence of the President of the Republic was carried out, Albert Lebrun and under the sponsorship of Fernandel and Mistinguett.
The Montmartre Field
Since then, each year, in October, this slinger challenge of the Republic of Montmartre became celebrates it `Fête of the Grape harvest of Closed Montmartre', in which take part in company of the Queen of the Grape harvest, the godfathers and godmothers (selected among personalities such them: Actors, Singers Writers…), multi-coloured brotherhoods and rhythmic brass bands come from various countries. For more than 70 years, in homage to Poulbot, the round of applause of the grape harvest has been traditionally opened by the President of the Republic of Montmartre on these a few arpents of soil located between the nimble Lapin and the old residence of Aristide Bruant.
