The Republic of Frankfurt (Freie Stadt Frankfurt) , created in 1815 of part of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, was composed of the city and a territory located on two banks of the Main and limited to North and North East by the electoral Hesse, to the South by Hesse-Darmstadt, and to the West by the Duché of Nassau: 13 kilometers out of 9, including the town of Francfort-sur-le-Main.

Sovereignty lay in the whole of the Christian population; the government was composed of a Sénat, a legislative Body and a municipal council. The city had 2 Bourgmestre S, named annually. In the ordinary assemblies of the diet, the joined together free cities had I voice; in the general meetings the republic of Frankfurt only counted for 1 vote with it.
