International form of the name

In the international organizations, the Republic of China is present under name “ Chinese Taipei (Chinese: 中華台北; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Táibĕi , French: “Chinese Taipei”), because of the not-recognition of this State by the Popular republic of China.

It is for example under this name that the Taiwanese sporting federations take part in the Olympic Games and with the international sporting events, with a Drapeau specific, different from the flag of the Republic of China.

In Chinese, this name is Zhōnghuá Táibĕi (中華台北), “the Chinese Taipei”; but the Popular republic uses Zhōngguó Táibĕi (中国台北), literally “Taipei, China”, placing the island on the same level as the special administrative Régions of HongKong and of Macao called in English, in particular on the postage stamps, “ HongKong, China ” and “ Macau, China ”.

History

This mode is the son of the reforming movements then Chinese révolutiono-republicans, and is quickly guided by the republican nationalist party of the Kuomintang. At the time of the Chinese civil war, and within sight of the close Communist victory of the S of PCC of Mao Zedong, the mode of the République of China is exiled “temporarily” on the island of Taiwan. From there, it continues to claim full sovereignty on the whole of the Chinese territory, but does not manage to find control of it, opens with the Démocratie, then gives up its claims more and more (in the facts, but not in the official discourse).

Demography

While inheriting the Qing empire officially, the Republic was in load of approximately 600 million men in the first decade of the 20th century. But the internal conflicts (cf “Lords of the War”) and external (Sino-Japanese War) limit the real control of the territory, and decimate the populations (battles, famines which had with the war).

When the Japanese capitulate, in 1945, the Republic then controlled by Guomingdang was still corroded by internal divisions. The official government east demolishes in 1949 by the Chinese Communist party and was exiled on the island of Taiwan. In 2005, the island account approximately 23 million inhabitants under the responsibility of the Republic of China.

Geography

While inheriting the Qing empire officially cut up by the foreign countries (the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Japan, Russia), China gave up many counters, many the “vassal ones” (Korea, Mongolia, Tibet, Vietnam) and the peaceful islands such Taiwan and the Pescadores. The Republic is thus purely continental, or almost.

Internal conflicts against the “lords of the war”, the creation of the Manzhouguo by Japan in 1931, then the Japanese conquests of the Sino-Japanese Guerre of 1937 with 1945 reduce the republican territory each time. In 1945, the Japanese defeat makes it possible to recover many territories in North and on the littoral. The Republic releases Taiwan in the name of UNO, and gains there finally many small islands.

But the Communists created many autonomous zones, which finally drive back Kuomintang and the Republic out of the continent. Islands of Taiwan, of Hainan, and all the series of the peaceful islands are soon the only territory under control of the Republic of China.

When Hainan falls, abandoned because indefensible, only remain under the Republic:

of other minor small islands

Today, the Republic of China defends its last possessions vis-a-vis the will of the Popular republic of China to join together the two States under its mode.
