Representative-representation

The representative-representation indicates a representation or a group of representations auxquelle the Pulsion binds. It is what confers on the impulse, which would be at the base somatic - and quantitative - its psychic character.

Two translations of this expression, corresponding to German " Vorstellungsrepräsentanz" are more faithful to German and in more comprehensible French:

" the substitute/the manifestation of the impulse in the form of représentation" or " the representation as a translation of the demonstration pulsionnelle" The freudiens terms of Vorstellung and Repräsentanz require a detailed explanation. Vorstellung wants to say in German running the idea that one is made qch, the representation that one has some; that concerns the conscience. This term often appears in the philosopher and psychological Franz Brentano, whose Freud followed the courses. Vorstellung with the direction freudien restricted, applied to the impulse, is it by what this impulse appears, which is its emanation, a psychic entity, but which does not arrive at the conscience; being driven back first once, this psychic entity created by the impulse and expressing the existence of this one will seek to appear in another way. It can be an image, a sound, a scene, a desire; For example, the incestueux desire towards the father is Vorstellung of the impulse. How to translate this term? The translators of Freud adopted all the term of representation, undoubtedly because it is the current translation of the dictionary, even if a representation, usually conscious, is unconscious here, and because these emanating contents of the impulse become often an image, a scene, something which is represented in the dream or of the formations of substitution. But the representation of the impulse can be accompanied by an emotional load, a psychic quantity of energy, which Freud calls a quota of affect (der Affektbetrag), which is often of the anguish. Or the affect, the emotion can appear alone (E); however, that is also resulting from the impulse. How consequently to indicate the simple demonstration of an impulse without indicating the form which it takes (image, image with emotional load, affect alone)? Freud solves the problem by introducing the term of Repräsentanz, especially present in the Triebrepräsentanz compound, which one can translate by the representative/the representation/the emanation/the manifestation of the impulse. The substantive Repräsentanz, unknown to standard German, had to appear possible in Freud because of frequency of the verb repräsentieren, to represent, whose advantage lies in the fact that the subject can be an object or an human being. And when Freud wants to specify that contents of this Repräsentanz, this emanation, this substitute of the impulse, is a representation, it forms a made up word: Vorstellungsrepräsentanz, which thus means " the manifestation of the impulse in the form of représentation". One thus sees that, in spite of appearances, the relationship between Vorstellung and Repräsentanz are not the same one as the bond linking Trieb and Repräsentanz in Triebrepräsentanz (representation of the impulse) - in French, also, the relationship between the words " pie of solda" T and " pie of campagne" is different. Let us quote a sentence which makes it possible to include/understand this made up word well; in Die Verdrängung, (repression, 1915) written Freud: " Wir haben also Grund, eine Urverdrängung anzunehmen, eine erste Phase der Verdrängung, die darin besteht, das DER psychischen (Vorstellungs-) Repräsentanz of Triebes die Übernahme ins Bewusste versagt wird."
