Renfe

The Renfe is the national company of exploitation of the Spanish railroads . It was created in 1941 by nationalization. The word is the Acronyme of Red nacional of los ferrocarriles españoles (domestic network of the Spanish railroads). Since January 1st, 2005, this entity does not manage any more the railway infrastructure because of creation of Administrador of will infraestructuras ferroviarias. It employs 31.860 worker.

The company exploits a network of 11829 km lines with broad way (spacing of 1668 mm), including 6942 km electrified in D.C. current 3kV, and 19 km of lines with metric gauge track electrified in D.C. current 1,5 Kv which belong to ADIF (Adminisstrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias).

It exploits moreover five lines at high speed (AVE) a length total of more than 1000 km to the European standard spacing (1435 mm) electrified in alternative course 25 Kv. These lines, Madrid - Seville and Madrid - Barcelona, Madrid - Malaga, Madrid - Huesca, Madrid - Toledo, are managed by an ad hoc official organization, ADIF, which has vocation, in the long term, to become, within the framework of the separation of the management of the infrastructure and the exploitation of the services imposed by Europe, the administrative of the whole of the network.
