Rene Vautier

Biography

Born from a factory worker father and a mother teacher, it undertakes her first militant activity within the Résistance in 1943, whereas it is 15 years old, which is worth several decorations to him. It is decorated with the Military Cross at 16 years, person in charge of the group “young people” of the clan Rene Madec, quoted with the Ordre of the Nation by the general Charles de Gaulle for facts of Résistance (1944).

After secondary studies with the college of Quimper, it is graduate IDHEC (Institute of the High Cinematographic Studies) in 1948, section realization.

In 1950, it carries out its first film, Africa 50 , which was a simple ordering of the Ligue of teaching intended to emphasize the educational mission of France in its colonies. On the spot, it decides to testify to a not ordered reality, the film will be interdict during more than forty years. It will be the first film French anticolonialist, masterpiece of the committed Cinéma, which will be worth 13 inculpations to him and a judgment of prison, its fellow accused is Felix Houphouët-Boigny. It is a judgment in violation about the decree Pierre Laval (Minister for the colonies) of 1934 and Vautier is put in military prison at Saint-Maixent, then in Niederlahnstein in French zone of German occupation. It leaves in June 1952.

Africa 50 receives the gold medal with the festival of Warsaw. Engaged in Africa on various turnings, it joined the Algerian Maquis. Director of the Audio-visual Center of Algiers (of 1961 with 1965), it is there also general secretary of the Popular Cinémas.

Of return in France, it founds in 1970 the Cinematographic Production unit Brittany (UPCB) from the point of view of “film with the country”. In January 1973, it begins an hunger strike, demanding “the suppression of the possibility, for the cinematographic commission of censure, to censure films without providing reasons; and prohibition, for this commission, to ask for cuts or refusal of visa for political criteria” . Rene Vautier will be right of the commission. He will be supported by Claude Sautet, Alain Resnais and Robert Enrico. At the end of this strike, the law will be amended. In 1974 it receives a special homage of the jury of the Film antiracist for the whole of his work. It founds in 1984 an independent production company: “Images without chains”.

He always endeavoured to place “the image and the sound at the disposal of those with which them established capacities refuse them”, to show “what are people and what they wish”. Like Jean-Luc Godard, which it crossed at the time of the constitution of the Groupes Medvedkine in 1968, only collective the scenario writer-workmen of the history of the cinema, Rene Vautier is one of the very rare scenario writers to develop a theory in act of the image.

He received in 1998 the Grand Prix of the Civil society of the Multimedia Authors for the whole of his work.

While having fought Jean-Marie Le Pen, it has, like the Abbé Pierre, nevertheless constant Roger Garaudy at the time of his lawsuit for Négationnisme. In fact, the scenario writer while testifying to his friendship and his admiration for the man, had clearly marked that it did not share the theses negationnists which were reproached this one.

He is decorated with the Ordre of Hermine.

He posed his bags with Cancale and has in preparation a film on the censure, assembled by his wife Soazig Chappedelaine, itself scenario writer.
