Work and the contribution of Rene Spitz

It is interested in the relation mother/infant .
It develops in particular the concepts of hospitalism and anaclitic depression starting from the emotional deficiencies which it observes in the infant and their consequences on the psycho-emotional development.

Spitz notes three markers of the psychic development of the child. It is:

  • the to smile in answer to the human face (in 2 months), which appears about the third month of life, in the presence of an unspecified person;

  • the Anguish in the presence of a foreign person, towards the eighth month but this stage depends on social factors contrary to the smile;
  • the stage of the non, in which the child learns how to be obstinated . For Spitz, the " non" is the result of a long process of maturation somato-psychic which opens the way towards the human communication (see its work " Not and yes, genesis of the communication humaine" , ED. PUF).
