Rene Painter
Rene Rapin , known as the Père Painter (Turns, 1621 - Paris, 1687) is a poet, theologist and historian French.
Entered the Society of Jesus in 1639, he was thereafter professor of Rhétorique, and composed an abundant work in worms and prose. Its Eclogæ Sacræ (1659) is worth the nickname of " to him; Second Théocrite" , and its poem on the gardens Hortorum Libri IV (1665), translated twice into English, fact of him one of the most appreciated poets of Latin language of its time. He is also the author of several critical tests, inter alia Réflexions on the use of the eloquence of this time (1672) and Réflexions on the poetic one of Aristote and the works of the old and modern poets (1676).
Painter wrote some theological and ascetic treaties, like Of nova doctrina dissertatio seu Evangelium Jansenistarum (1656), the spirit of Christianity (1672), the perfection of Christianity (1673), the faith of the last centuries (1679). All these works are gathered in its complete Œuvres , published in Amsterdam in 1709-1710. Two historical works, History of jansénisme (1861) and Memories on the church, the company, the court, the city and jansénisme (1865) were published only after its death. In Port-Royal, Holy-Beuve tries to take systematically at fault Rapin, but recent studies showed that there remained a valid source about the Jansénisme.
