Rene Monory

Rene Monory is a French politician born the June 6th 1923 with Loudun (Vienna), founder of the Futuroscope of Poitiers in 1984 and chair Sénat from October 2nd, 1992 to September 30th, 1998.

Biography

The " garagiste" of Loudun (1923-1955)

Of modest origin, provided for only diploma with an elementary patent and an industrial patent, it starts to work at the 15 years age like apprentice mechanic in the workshop of his father. In 1943, refusing the Service of Obligatory Work (STO), it hides to escape the deportation and as of the Release, begins again the paternal garage to do of them one of the most prosperous concessions of the area poitevine. Very quickly, it adds to it other activities (sale and repair of agricultural machinery, fuel…).

The sporting man

Automobile follower of sport (it took part in the 24 hours of Mans), of fishing and hunting, table tennis (it was classified among the 15 best players of France) to large (he was world champion to have fished a swordfish of 47 kilos with a wire of 12 mm), Rene Monory also likes the parts of game of bowls with his friends, of which faithful the Henri Salvador.

The town councilor and the project of the Futuroscope (1955-2004)

The fast success in its businesses with Loudun enables him to arise to the municipal elections of 1955 and he is elected mayor in 1959. Two years later, he is elected general adviser of the Vienna. In 1973, it created one of the first communities of communes of France from which he becomes the president.

Convinced by the policies of decentralization to beginning of the year 80, it supports the establishment of the foundries Renault and the creation of a nuclear plant in the department of the Vienna. In 1984, it launches the project of the Futuroscope of Poitiers, park European of the image, car-being qualified like a " popularizer of ideas nouvelles" . He is pressed then on the university and local industrial fabric. Devoted to new technologies, the park comprises 3 shutters: formation, work and the leisure. A zone of meeting and user-friendliness is also created via a palate of the congresses. Since its opening, the park accommodated 32 million visitors .

In 1996, it launches the 1st Plan Internet Départemental making it possible to equip all the schools (primary and maternal) and the colleges with the Vienna of an access to Internet with a data-processing station for 10 pupils (today for 4 pupils).

The national elected official (1968-2004)

Elected official senator in 1968, it is noticed by Raymond Barre and becomes Minister of Industry in 1977 then Ministre for the Economy and Finances of 1978 to 1981. During its presence with the government, it follows the file of nuclear energy to France and that of the release of the prices (release of the industrial prices, law “Monory” supporting the shareholding…).

Minister for State education in 1986, attached to the training of young people, his mandate is marked by many disputes coeds following the university reform project of its minister-delegate Alain Devaquet and where a student, Malik Oussekine, finds death on December 6th, 1986.

Elected official chair Sénat of 1992 to 1998, its mandate is marked by the will to give to the institution an image “modern” and “opened on the world”: creation of a division of the international relations, creation of a service of data processing and technological development in 1993, launching of an Internet site in 1995. Its meeting mediatized with Bill Gates on February 5th, 1997 and its frequent voyages in China, Japan and Korea will confirm an international recognition of French politician impossible to circumvent in the field of New technologies of Information and the Communication (NTIC).

Obviously weakened by the age, on September 30th, 1998 he is candidate for his own succession with the presidency of the Senate, but he is not re-elected. Having put an end to its political career in 2004, he lives from now on in his field of Beaurepaire, a few kilometres from Loudun.
