Rene-Maurice Gattefossé

Rene-Maurice Gattefossé (born in 1881 around Lyon in France - deceased in 1950 with Casablanca).

Rene-Maurice Gattefossé is regarded as one of the founding fathers of the contemporary Aromathérapie: indeed, it is him which creates in 1928 the term of Aromathérapie which was even the title of one of its books, published in 1937.

Biography

Born in 1881, around Lyon, Rene-Maurice Gattefossé is during all his childhood in the world of the Parfums, since his/her father Louis Gattefossé and his Abel big brother worked in a specialized company in the factory of the Parfums and the Cosmétiques (the Gattefossé establishments had been founded in 1882 with Lyon (then with Paris)).

It follows studies of Engineer Chimiste to the Faculty of Science of Lyon of which it is graduate in (?).

Very quickly, it integrates the Entreprise family with his brother. Each brother has an attribution according to his specificity: Abel Gattefossé is in load of the trade and administrative while Rene-Maurice Gattefossé deals with research out of gasolines and Parfums.

In 1907, the father of Rene-Maurice Gattefossé withdraws businesses by creating a partnership which associates the two specialized brothers each one in a field.

In 1907, Rene-Maurice Gattefossé founds the review " Moderne" Perfumery;.

He dies with Casablanca in 1950.

Let us note that the son of Rene-Maurice Gattefossé, Henri-Marcel, will follow courses to the School of industrial Chemistry to Lyon and will become Engineer Chimiste just like his brother-in-law, Emile Mahler. Both will share the responsibilities for the company: Henri-Marcel Gattefossé fascinating charges with it research veterinary surgeon and Emile Mahler dermatological research.

Currently, there exists always a Gattefossé company, specialized in the Parfums and Cosmétiques.

Work and the contribution of Gattefossé

The contribution of Rene-Maurice Gattefossé was to write many books on the Cosmétique, the Parfums, the Savon S, the Aromathérapie, etc (see bibliography).

In July 1910, it arrives to him an accident, become famous: following an explosion in its laboratory, it burns the hands and the skin of the head. It plunges the hands in what it has with its range, i.e. a solution of essential Huiles containing Lavande (Lavandula angustifolia). It is impressed to see the speed with which it cures, which more is, with few after-effects. This incident gives birth to its interest for the essential Huiles.

Let us announce that during the First World War of 1914 - 1918, one uses on soldiers of essential oils of Thym, of Citron (etc) for their properties Antiseptique S. a soap disinfectant containing essential oils is even marketed in 1918.

In 1928, Gattefossé invents the term of Aromathérapie.

In 1936, it works in collaboration with Médecin S and Hôpitaux.

In 1937, Gattefossé writes its book the most famous “Aromathérapie - essential Oils - vegetable hormones”.

He dies in 1950 with Casablanca.

Its work was a track that other discoverers of the Phytothérapie, Aromathérapie, essential Huiles traversed after him: Jean Valnet, P. Belaiche, Franchomme, etc
