Rendsburg

Rendsburg (in French, sometimes Rendsbourg in a historical context; in Danish Rendsborg ) is a German city on the channel of the North Sea in the Baltic (North-Ostsee-Kanal, still called Canal of Kiel or Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal), in the North-East of the the Schleswig-Holstein. It is the capital of the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde. Its population is of 29.400 inhabitants.

History

The date of its foundation is unknown. Rendsburg is mentioned for the first time in 1199. The city is attached to Holstein at the 13th century, but passes to Schleswig in 1460. It becomes with multiple recoveries and alternatively Danish or German possession. During the war which opposes the two nations in 1864, Rendsburg is finally conquered by the prusso-Austrian coalition and, after 1866, annexed in Prussia.

From the point of view of the inheritance of the metal Architecture, Rendsburg has a splendid bridge of railroad to beams Cantilever (1913) crossing the channel, equipped with an outer loop of access and one of both transporter bridges existing in Germany (there remains about it eight in the world).
