Renault 4CV
The Renault 4CV is a modest French car, but with a particularly roomy interior for its time and compared to its obstruction. It was the first to reach a production of a million specimens. It was conceived by Fernand Picard and Edmond Serre.
History
This vehicle was designed in quasi secret initially in Aluminum, in version two doors, during the war, while taking as a starting point the Volkswagen Coccinelle. Presented to the French at the time of the Motor-show in 1946, it gained one big hit in spite of its extreme sensitivity to the cross-wind, difficult to overcome in spite of the rack-and-pinion steering. It was at once called “the mound of Beurre” because of its form, but especially of its yellow color sands: painting used to paint the first models came from surplus of the German army and would have been used to paint the tanks of the Afrika Korps. Its technical main features are the following ones:
- Truck 4 places/4 doors
- Driving placed in back Overhang with 3 stages, of 760 cm ³ (for the first models) then 748 cm ³ as from 1952. It is about one 4 cylinders with Soupapes at the head but side Camshaft which develops 17 then 21 ch.
- manual Gear box 3 reports/ratios, 1st not synchronized.
- hydraulic Brakes with drum before and back.
Its only coquetteries will be additional menus, like the shoes of Robri wing or the table of camp-site " KIS-ply".
An advertizing slogan of the time announced: “4 Frank horses, 4 doors, 444.000 ! ”
The " 4 pattes" underwent many modifications throughout its long carrière : as from 1949, the roof becomes more curvature to improve the habitability. Many preparers improved the engine and the back suspension. It was in the beginning many prototypes and took part in many sporting events. It gained in particular its category with the Rallye of Monte Carlo 1951. The Alpine first , the A106, designed by Jean Rédélé, was built on a basis of 4CV.
It was manufactured with the Japan under the Hino mark.
Its successors were the Renault 4 and the Renault 5
