Renaud-Bray
The bookstore Renaud-Bray is more the large chain of bookstores of the language French E in North America.
The chain was founded in 1965 by Pierre Renaud and Edmond Bray, with the opening of its first store on the street Coast-Of-Snows with Montreal. 1971 mark the end of association between Edmond Bray and Pierre Renaud. Mr. Renaud becomes the single owner.
The chain began its expansion in 1978 thanks to data processing, this company becomes among the first in America to computerize its data bank of books of more than 30 000 titles. Then all the company moves in the St. Lawrence thereafter.
- 1988 On Coast-of-Snows (Montreal), the bookstore covers a size of 8000 now pi/carrés.
- 1989 Opening of a store on Bay-tree, Montreal. Becomes a sorting office thereafter. And thereafter in 1989 a Renaud-Bray youth makes his opening too on the way Coast-of-Snows.
- 1993 Saint-Denis becomes the next destination. Like on Avenue of the Park.
- 1994 Peel, district of English reputation, becomes the next target one of Mr. Renaud.
- 1995 Are a great year for this company which acquired Club-Compact way of Coast-of-Snows. There was also during this same period the inauguration of the Renaud-Bray Ontario. During this time, the bookstore RB Youth increases and is installed in a larger place on Coast-of-Snows. As well as the opening of a store on Holy-Catherine who is one or rather the largest artery of Montreal.
- The Bank-South of Montreal becomes a center of interest for RB. It decides to open in Brossard. At the same time, it starts to have problems of bearing in Toronto English queen city of Canada. RB acknowledges its failure before its banking institution which requires of the company to engage a specialist company in rectification. In 1995, fateful year, RB places itself under the law of the protection of the bankruptcy, for then closing the branch of Peel and Holy-Catherine, on March 13rd, 1995.
Several months of negotiation and thereafter an agreement between Renaud-Bray and central trade-union FTQ (Federation of the workers of Quebec) proposes like partner and decides to invest in the future of this company.
July 17th, 1996
R- B is saved. 4 bookstores survive and a promising future becomes possible.
- 1997 a méga reorganization occurs advisedly for the enlarging of the personnel which counts 165 employees.
- 1998 1st time that RB publishes a catalog of 300.000 specimens. For thus opening a fifth bookstore located… He yes! on the streets Crescent and Holy-Catherine. Maintaining the company counts 225 employees.
- June 1999 RB buys its candidates, Champigny and Garneau. Thus RB becomes the wide-area network of French-speaking bookstores in America.
- 2001 R- B receives the price " Creator of emplois" granted the 30 most powerful companies. Maintaining all the branches are under the Renaud-Bray banner.
- 2004 Opening of a store in the Fairview Center with Point-clear, first French-speaking bookstore of the west of the island of Montreal.
- 2005 Renaud-Bray celebrates his 40e birthday.
- 2005 DIVIDE INTO VOLUMES in Lévis (Quebec) becomes RB property.
- A 2005 work-related conflict occurs between the employees associated with the FTQ and the employer. The event begin with a strike from the employees, who asked a work contract and for a pay rise corresponding to inflation. The strike will be curtailed, since two days later, the employer imposed a lockout . After ten days, the lockout is raised and the employees retort with a strike since the negotiations did not succeed. A new collective agreement is finally adopted on December 15th, 2005.
