Remouchamps

Remouchamps (in Walloon Remoutchamp ) is a village of the common Belgian of Aywaille located in Walloon region in the Province of Liege.

It was a common to whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1919. It amalgamated with Sougné to form the commune of Sougné-Remouchamps.

History

The village was inhabited as of the oldest times, as testify some the prehistoric vestiges discovered in its famous cave and in the neighborhoods, in particular in the Leduc property, at the edge of Amblève between the Francotte bridge and the viaduct of the railroad.

Several historians see in Sougné the chief town of Sègnes or Sègniens, Gallic subgroup mentioned by Jules César during his conquest of the Gaules about year 52 before Jesus-Christ.

To the the Middle Ages, as of the 11th century, the lord of the manor of Remouchamps is dedicated seigniory of Aywaille, on which Remouchamps depends. Against certain privileges, it makes reign the order and returns justice in the name of the lord of Aywaille. He lives the castle of Montjardin, drawn up on a rock base above the floods of Amblève, with two steps of the heart of the village of Remouchamps.

Peaceful village, Remouchamps crosses the centuries without pointing out itself if it is not at the end of the Ancien Mode. Indeed, in 1794, it is on its heights, the Heid of Gattes, which place has famous the Bataille of Sprimont which sees the French Armies definitively rejecting the Austrians towards the the Rhine. One of the difficulties principal of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the coast of Redoute , evokes the memory of one of the places of this battle.

The villages of Remouchamps, Nonceveux, Sedoz and Quarreux are attached to the municipality of Aywaille while Sougné and On Heid depend on Sprimont. It will be necessary to await 1836 to see them joining together with the commune of Aywaille.

Whoever, of passage to Remouchamps, must visit its famous cave. Named “the Wonder of the Wonders”, it is arranged and opened with the public since 1829. The cave is primarily consisted the superposition of two galleries which develop on approximately 2.800 meters. Underground navigation is done on the Rubicon.
