History
The history of the town of Relizane goes up at the time of the kingdoms of the Numides which ranges between 203 and 213 before J.C. Its old name was Mina which draws its origin from name from Wadi-Mined on which the commune of Relizane is located, close to the confluence. The area of Mina known under the Roman domination which lasted five century old meadows, its apogee in the agricultural and commercial development because of the fertility of its grounds and the richness of its ground. Relizane was founded on the site of the antique Roman Castellum of Mined. The Islam had made its appearance in the area of the West into 681, into 719-720 the tribes of Relizane all were reconverted with Islam with the arrival of Foamed-Ibn-Nassir. At the XIXe century, agriculture was threatened very often by frequent drynesses. It is not into 1852 that the French troops had occupied Relizane; In 1844, the French genius repaired the old stopping (old hydraulic works restored partly at the XVIIIe century). In 1853, the first Europeans settled in the plain and cultivated small barley and corn surfaces plus some surfaces of tobacco quickly abandoned (paludism decimated at the time of the whole populations). But the creation of Relizane was decided only in January 1857. Since, certain houses built after the railroad Algiers - Oran gave him a new face. Meanwhile the European population increased. The French came from the South (Gard) and the Spaniards from Valence, of Alicante, Murcie, Almeria. A score of farms made the culture of the Coton. The city experiences an extraordinary development then, but the diseases, the dryness, insufficient harvests, slowed down any progress. Let us add to the natural disaster, the events which preceded the imperial voyage and whose after-effects made the primary reason of the incident of May 1865. In the Oranian South burst the revolt of the Ouled Sidi sheik, revolt due to dissatisfaction since 1860. The disillusions and promises not held by the occupant and the increasingly marked arrogance of Europeans, civilians and soldiers, are at the origin of one of the greatest insurrections which was going to last until 1896. The north of the province did not escape the insurrectionary movement directed by Sidi Lazrag Belhadj, chief of a Zaouïa stirring up close to Zemmora and around which the powerful confederation of the Flitas was agitated. Sidi Lazrag decided to join battle with the French gaining some successes. The danger threatening Relizane was imminent. Colonization against resistance, Flitas attacked successively Ammi Moussa, center recently created (1840) on left bank of Oued Rhiou.
