Religion in New York

Peter Stuyvesant, governor of the New Amsterdam and fervant protesting, tried in 1656 to impose the religious unit on the colony. The Western campagnie of the Indies was opposed to it, for fear that does not harm the trade, because already at that time, New York was a mosaic of religions. Nowadays, more than 100 confessions côtoient themselves there. Catholicism is the dominating religion, even if the Jewish community is most important there apart from Israel.

Christianity

Catholic church

The Archdiocese of New York account 2.521.087 faithful catholics, is 45% of the total population. Historically, the number of catholics increased following the waves of immigration of Italians, Irishman and Porto Ricans.

The Protestants nativists

The Protestantisme remained until the middle of the XIXe century the dominant religion. After the massive immigration of Irish and German catholics, half of the population practiced the catholisime towards 1864.

Black Christian communities

At the end of the XVIIIe century, vis-a-vis discrimination and with the racial segregation, a group of New Yorkean Blacks formed their own confession. Today, majority of the black churches of New York, whose famous Abyssinian Baptist Church , is with Harlem. The most communities are the Baptists, the methodists, the pentecotists.

Pilot of Jéhovah

They represent one of the most important Christian movements of New York and publish two magazines since their seats of Brooklyn. Diffused with more than 10 million specimens, there exist in 112 languages.

The Judaism

More than one million orthodoxe Jews of Eastern Europe speaking the Yiddish settled with New York between 1880 and 1910. They founded daily newspapers, theatrical companies, socialist political associations and trade unionists. After the second world war, the Jews of New York supported the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine and mobilized themselves to obtain to government a help for Israel.

The Loubavitch

Lubavithxher Chassidic Movement, whose seat is with Brooklyn, is a current mystic of the Judaïsme. It counts famous specialities of the Talmud. Its male followers are recognizable with their black suits, their barbs and their curlpapers.

The Islam

It was spread only in half of the XXe century. The mosque and farming center open since 1991, includes/understands the Mosquée and the Moslem arts center. It is located at the angle of 96th Street and 3rd Avenue. Its axis forms with the street an angle of 29° so that the building is turned towards Mecque.

The Buddhism

The imposing statue of Shinran-Shonin, the founder of the Buddhist sect Jodo Shinshu, day before on the temple of New York, built in 1938 on Riverside Drive. This statue, set up originally with Hiroshima, to 2,5km of the place of the explosion of the bomb, was transported to New York in 1955 to point out the atomic horror and to symbolize a hope of durable peace in the world.
