Vitellius (Latin: AVLVS•VITELLIVS•GERMANICVS•IMPERATOR•AVGVSTVS) (September 24th 15 - December 22nd 69) is a Roman Emperor having reigned of the January 2nd 69 with the lasting December 22nd of the same year what is called the Année of the four emperors.

Its beginnings

Aulus Vitellius is the son of Lucius Vitellius, Consul and governor of Syria under Tibère. Vitellius passed its youth to Capri in the middle of the nice ones of the emperor Tibère. It attracted itself then the favors of Caligula by its qualities of driver of tank and those of Claude and Néron by its qualities with the play of Des. the friendship of these emperors enables him to be first of all Consul in 48, then in the neighborhoods of 60-62 proconsul of Africa. Its advent

Vitellius was far from being ambitious, it rather lazy and was very attracted by food and drink. With died of Bent, assassinated by Othon, Vitellius is proclaimed emperor, or more precisely emperor of the armies of Germanic Lower and Higher by its legions the January 2nd 69 than Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne). At the same Othon time is proclaimed emperor in Rome by the Praetorian Garde directed by Nymphidius Sabinus. Vitellius then divides its legions in two groups. It takes the command of the one and sends the other against Othon. It owes its accession with the throne with its two generals Caecina and Valens which ordered the two legions of the the Rhine: those cross the Alps and beat the army of Othon to the Bataille of Bedriac, the April 14th 69. Othon commits suicide two days later and Vitellius goes on Rome as a winner.

The April 19th, the Roman Senate ratifies the nomination of Vitellius as emperor. The army of Vitellius is delivered on its way to plundering and the massacre, the new emperor shown to him also a great cruelty and quickly becomes unpopular.

Its fall

The July first, the troops of Egypt proclaim Vespasien emperor. By learning the news the legions from Messiah, Pannonia, and Dalmatie also revolt and lend oath to Vespasien. In Rome the first disorders start, Vitellius to choke the revolt then makes kill, in setting fire to Capitole, Titus Flavius Sabinus, the prefect of the city and brother of Vespasien. Antonius Primus which orders the legions of the the Danube invades Italy of north and beats the army of Vitellius with Crémone at the end of October 69. It takes then the direction of Rome. The ones after the others the allies of Vitellius join with Vespasien. Vitellius tries very to negotiate a peace, without success. Whereas the first elements of the army of Primus penetrate in Rome, it tries to flee, and hides in the cabin of the gatekeeper of its palate. Captured by the men of Primus he is recognized and lapidated by Roman crowd, her body is trailed by a hook and jeté in the the Tiber.

Domitien the son junior by Vespasien is then named césar while waiting for the arrival of the Vespasien emperor in Rome with the end of the year 70.
