Chronology

Exploration

At the end of the 16th century, the Spaniards launch starting from the News-Spain (Mexico) of forwardings towards the current territory of Colorado. Juan de Humana, Francisco Leiva Bonilla, Juan de Zaldivar, Don Juan de Onate and Juan de Archuleta explore the area. At the beginning of the 17th century, Juan de Ulibarri and Pedro de Villasu cross the state.

After the Sale of Louisiana by France, the western half of Colorado becomes American. It is necessary to await the defeat of Mexico in 1848 to see the remainder State to pass it under American influence. Whereas Lewis and Clark recognized the north of the Rocky Mountains, their southernmost part is explored by the American captain Zebulon Pike at the beginning of the 19th century. But it is necessary to wait the years 1850 so that the first permanent establishments become significant.

Exploitation of the resources

The current territory of Colorado was explored and exploited before its creation by the French, the Spaniards and the Americans. These adventurers came to seek mainly furs in the establishments installed along the Arkansas and of the South Platte, like Bent' S Fort, Fort Pueblo or Fort St Vrain. With the gold rush of 1859 and the money (1879-1893), a great number of colonists came to populate the area of Denver. Old mining cities were thereafter given up and became phantom Villes. Others were reconverted or thrived thanks to other activities: Aspen (ski station), Telluride and Cripple Creek.

Amerindian tribes

  • Apaches in the Eastern plains of Colorado at the 18th century. They left then the place to the Arapaho S and with the Cheyenne S.
  • Arapaho settled at the end of the 19th century in Colorado. They were driven out after the war of Colorado in 1865.
  • Cheyenne S which was constrained to leave in the years 1860.
  • Shoshone S occupied the valleys of north (Yampa River for example).
  • Ute S installed for a long time in Colorado. They on several occasions fought Arapahos and Cheyennes. After the wars against the money and gold diggers, they left for the Utah; some were maintained in the reserves of the south-west of the state.

Geography

The Colorado is a State of the center of the the United States, of a surface of 270  000 km ², populated 4  301  261 inhabitants (2000). It is bordered in north by the Wyoming; in the North-East by the Nebraska; in the east by the Kansas; in the south by the Oklahoma and the New Mexico; and in the west by the Utah.

The capital of the Colorado east Denver, whose agglomeration concentrates half of the inhabitants of the State.

Colorado is the only American State which is entirely above 1  000 meters. Its lower point is 1  010 m, in the Arikaree river.

Policy

Colorado is historically rather moderated and republican.

Historically, the State leans rather towards the republicans at the time of the presidential elections. The democrat Franklin Roosevelt had however carried it in 1932 and 1936, but had been beaten there in 1940 and 1944. Thereafter, only the democrats Harry Truman in 1948 and Lyndon Johnson in 1964 were elected in the majority absolute there. In 1992, Bill Clinton arrived at the head of the candidates with 40,13% of the votes compared with 35,87% at George Bush and 23,32% to the populist candidate Ross Perot. In 2004, the president George W. Bush was re-elected there with 51,69% of the voices compared with 47,02% with the democratic John Kerry.

Since the January 9th 2007, the governor of the State is the democrat Bill Ritter, who succeeded the republican Bill Owens (governor of 1999 with 2007).

In 2007 - 2008, three other elected stations of the executive (attorney, Secretary of State and treasurer of State) are held by republicans.

At the time of the session 2007-2008, the legislature of Colorado, made up of an assembly of 65 members, is dominated by 39 democratic elected officials and the senate, composed of 35 members, by 20 Democratic senators.

At the federal level, Colorado is represented with the Senate by the Republican senator Wayne Allard and by the Democratic senator Ken Salazar and with the Chambre of the Representatives by three republicans and four democrats.

In November 2006, by 56% of the votes, the voters voted by Référendum a law prohibiting the Homosexual marriage.

Economy

In the middle of the 19th century, the economy of Colorado took off thanks to the money and gold ores, thanks to agriculture then with the extensive breeding. After the Great Depression of the years 1930, the State found a certain economic prosperity with the establishment of military bases (Colorado Springs) and of federal agencies (NOAA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, American geological Institut). Following the installation of the American space command ( custom space commend ) with Colorado Springs, technological industries of point such as Lockeed Martin were established in the area.

In second half of the 20th century, the economy of the State diversified and was directed in particular towards the advanced technology industries in relation to research centres scientist.

In 2003, the income per capita was of 34  561 dollars (8th rank of the United States).
