Rejection (versification)

Clarifications and examples

The rejection seems a particular stressing of the Enjambement. It is consisted a short element (some syllables followed by a marked cut) syntactically related to the worms precedent but is deferred (“rejected”) to the beginning of the worms following to create an effect of underlining and of surprised after the strong attenuation of the traditional pause at the end of the worms.

Example:

“And consequently, I bathed in the poem

Of the sea , infused stars and lactescent” Rimbaud - the drunk boat'' (towards 21-22)

Of a very old employment, the rejection was emphasized by the romantic Poésie which asserted it like a mark of freedom and expressivity, going until constructions provocantes like that of Victor Hugo in the first towards Hernani :

“Would this Be already him? It is well with the staircase

Catch . ”

Remarks

the opposite process (development of a short element at the end of worms which spans on the following) is called the Against-rejection.

One meets sometimes the association of the two processes (rejection and against-rejection) to reinforce the stylistic effect. Examples:

Trembled ( rejection ), Napoleon included/understood that it expiait…” Victor Hugo - “the Atonement”, towards 62-63 the Punishments

“And, Love filling all, except ( against-rejection )

the hunger ( rejection ), sorbets and jams

It is necessary to take guard not to confuse it with the Enjambement of which it is only one particular stressing.
