Reinhard Scheer
Reinhard Scheer (September 30th 1863 – November 26th 1928) was a German vice-admiral. It ordered the Hochseeflotte , the Fleet of open sea of the German imperial Navy during the Bataille of Jutland, greater battle naval of the First World War.
Scheer was born with Obernkirchen in Germany. It enters the Navy in 1879, becoming Captain in 1905 and Rear-admiral in 1910. Character with the strict discipline, it was known in the Navy like the “Man with the iron mask” because of his severe appearance.
Scheer became chief of the Fleet of open sea in January 1916. May 30th, it directed this fleet during the Battle of Jutland. Although not having beaten the Royal Navy, it succeeds in avoiding the destruction of the German fleet vis-a-vis a more British fleet, its ships inflicting even heavy losses with the English. German Kaiser Guillaume II offered to him the title of knight for his command during this battle but Scheer refused this honor (its second during the battle, the vice-admiral Franz Hipper which directed the battleships accepted and was to him anobli under the name of Franz Ritter von Hipper). After Jutland, Scheer did not believe any more that the British Navy by the Fleet of German Open sea in combat also became can be demolished a fervent supporter of the underwater war against the British.
It taken its retirement in 1918 after the mutiny of Kiel and the German Revolution which was followed from there.
Married in 1899 with Emilie Mohr, this one and her daughter are assassinated the October 9th 1920 during a vol.
In 1928, Scheer accepted an invitation to meet its old adversary of the Battle of Jutland, the admiral John Jellicoe, in England, but he dies right before his voyage, with Marktredwitz. He is buried with Weimar where on its tomb, besides its name and its birth dates and of death, are engraved only one word " Stagerrak " (German name of the place of the battle of Jutland)
