Reiki

Description and History

Reiki is a Japanese generic word which means “spiritual force”, it is also used by other movements without relationship with the method of Mikao Usui (Reiki Shamballa, Reiki Karuna etc.). There exist several methods, of which that of Mikao Usui called the Usui reiki ryoho , which means “technical of Usui of connection to universal energy”.

It was developed in Japan by its founder Mikao Usui (1865 - 1926) starting from 1922, its expansion in occident is due to Chujiro Hayashi like with Hawayo Takata and has his/her niece who transmitted these principles and trained Western Masters.

According to its experts, the goal of Reiki is to relieve, bring calm mental, an interior peace and a wellbeing in general. It would thus be based on the concept esoteric traditional Japanese of the Ki , “universal energy of life”, the “breath” which circulate everywhere in Nature, in particular in the body and allow its operation, its life, and which connects the beings, some of between-them associate a relationship to the activation of the Chakra S.

Reiki would be inspired by the Shintoiste Japanese, of which it partly takes again the system of Initiation which is called Reikiki in the traditional shintoism. It also partly refers to the Buddhist system , thus one of the symbols reiki is the pictorial representation of the Mantra of the compassion, the syllable (bija) hrih which symbolizes the Buddha Amitabha. The symbol of Master (Daikomyo) returns to will mantra Shingon Daï Komyo (great light) which is represented in this tradition by a Mandala in which the Buddha Vairocana is surrounded of the colors of the Arc-en-ciel with in periphery the 23 white moons including/understanding of the letters sanscrites.

In practice, the laying on of hands is judicious to channel “energy”.

Initiation of the various degrees in traditional Reiki

To become expert, it is necessary to receive an initiation or harmonization by a “teaching Master of Reiki Usui”.

The passage of the levels is generally paying, the “Reiki Master” carries out a “initiatory Rituel or harmonization” during which some Symbole S will be learned with the pupil according to his level, and a process of “energy balancing” “will be waked up” and “will be stimulated”.

Reiki in the World

According to the report/ratio of the the World Health Organization of 2001 which evaluates the statute (use, recognition, teaching, refunding) of nonconventional medicines in the world, Reiki is quoted only once as being taught in Latvia. In Great Britain, the National Health Service (NHS) recruited a Reiki expert for Middlesex Hospital in 2005 and the Supra insurance refunds the consultations of Reiki like about thirty others not-conventional Médecine after a recognition of the experts by independent organisms like the “Empirical Register of Medicine (RME)” and the “Foundation for the recognition and the development of the alternative and complementary therapies (ASCA)”.

Opinion on the effectiveness

According to the National institute of the Health of the United States, Reiki is not a Médecine based on facts but a Croyance based on the Foi and the magic Pensée.

The National council against the frauds in the field of the health of the United States declares that the effects allotted to Reiki would be of origin psychological, as what one notes in the Effet placebo or the Suggestion, or which there would not be real effect or which there is no effect. According to Edzard Ernst, complementary professor of medicine, after having studied all the literature on Reiki, it is improbable that its effectiveness exceeds that of the Effet placebo.

There are no scientific evidence of the effectiveness of Reiki or existence of the ki. Thus according to the " National center for complementary medicines and alternatives" from the United States, one does not know if Reiki influences the health and how it could do it, and the existence of the ki was not scientifically proven.

Criticisms

Reiki was taught in several ways different according to the groups so much so that there exists of the controversies on the nature of “Reiki energy”, the price of the meetings, the method of training and the secrecy of the symbols. Certain groups do not recognize the others like practitioner true Reiki.

Critics say that the Reiki Masters exploit the hope and the fear of the sick people for money, giving only a Effet placebo in return, they notice that into certain cases of the patients reject the conventional Médecine and practice only Reiki or others nonconventional Médecines, thus putting their life in danger.

In France, UNADFI (National union of Defense associations of the Families and the Individual victims of sects), because of “worrying facts” asks the people wishing to practice the reiki “to distinguish the practices serious and enriching by the practices manipulatoires”.

The practice of Reiki can be incompatible with other religious beliefs.
