Reigate
Reigate is a town of England, in the Surrey. Belonging to the urban Surface of London, it consistue the essence of the district of Reigate and Banstead. It forms an urban contiunuity with its neighbor Redhill.
Its name comes from Roe-deer Gate , the “Door of the Roe-deer”, the name of the enclosure seigneurial containing roe-deers located in the vicinity. One meets sometimes the orthography Ryegate .
History
Originally called Cherchefelle , deformation of church field , it is mentioned with the Domesday Book. William the Conqueror gave it to his comrade in arms Guillaume de Warenne, who was created Count de Surrey in 1088. The construction of the castle by Warenne involved a displacement of the agglomeration, site of Cherchefelle to the current site of Reigate. This castle was destroyed in 1648.At the 13th century founded was prioré of Reigate by the regular Chanoines of saint Augustin, who was dissolved like the other monasteries in 1535.
