Regulate of Augustin saint

Paradoxically and in spite of the importance of its theological work, Saint Augustin did not write of rule for the religious orders. However, during the the Middle Ages, of the monastic orders is created and the regular Moine S live according to the precepts of Augustin saint. One gives today, the name of rule of saint Augustin to a text used by Césaire of Arles, archbishop of Arles of 502 with 542, for a religious community in difficulty after the death of sound Abbé.

This text includes/understands two parts:

  • a regulation of the monastic life indicating the occupation of the various moments of the day
  • a series of councils on the life of a female community.
This second part would be hand of Augustin saint.

Let us note that the oldest manuscripts of this rule, date from the 7th century.

Several orders or communities use it today:

Certain female religious orders follow a rule written by Augustin saint for his sister who founded an order with Hippone. One can mention the Augustines and the orders which of it result.
