Alone in the Dark is a play of adventure in 3D considered as one of the first plays (if not the first) of the kind Survival horror , kind returned celebrates thereafter with through success of the series of the Resident Evil . The history is inspired by the news of H.P. Lovecraft, where the player incarnates a character led to study a “suicide” in an old manor of Louisiana.

The play gained several prices in France and with the Japan of which the Tilt of gold decreed by the magazine of the same name for the price of the best play of adventure of 1992.

From a technical point of view, it is one of the first two plays to introduce the playable characters in polygon in a precalculated environment. But especially, it is the first play to use sequences of interpolated animations which make it possible to reduce the size memory of the play, and to propose an animation 3D adapting to the power of the machine.

The play left under DOS, Macintosh, PC CDROM (2 versions) and was then adapted on 3DO. The play is the first opus of the series of plays Alone in the Dark.

Preamble

The painter Jeremy Hartwood, owner of the attractive residence of Derceto, died. After a fast investigation, the police force concludes with the suicide. According to the declarations of its faithful majordomo, Jeremy seemed extremely tormented these last months. In spite of its precarious health, it became exhausted literally with reading and translating the old manuscripts whose the library abounds in Derceto.

It seemed to watch for something or fear a mysterious presence. Derceto is now abandoned… but of strange rumors circulate, speaking about curse and démoniaque power. At the beginning, the character controlled by the player (with the choice Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood) very does not take these dires with serious, the inhabitants of the surroundings being very superstitious. But, gradually, the doubt penetrates in its spirit…

Development

The original engine of the play was created by Frédérick Raynal like small independent project at Infogrames. With the assistance of Didier Chanfray which carried out the models 3D, a functional prototype made it possible to follow the evolution of a character in an attic, the whole in 3D. An internal competition with Infogrames made it possible to paint the various sights and textures used. Few achievements, that of Yaël Barroz was chosen, it was included later in the team ensuring the development of the play. This finalized prototype made it possible to convince the direction of Infogrames and the launching of the project In the Dark (the project changing several times of names during the development). Frédérick Raynal was logically proposed to direct the project.

Little time after the exit of Alone in the Dark , an important dissension between the team and Bruno Bonnell (president d' Infogrames) took place concerning the direction which the continuation should take. The company wanting a continuation with more action, and equips it preferring to remain in the optics of a Survival horror . The majority of the team left Infogrames to found a new studio called Adeline Software International and thus did not take part in Alone in the Dark 2 .

However, an interview made before the rupture shows that important parts thought by the original team were preserved in the final version of the play. Maintenance presents in particular a sketch of the new house to be used (house that one finds in Alone in the Dark 2 ) and the fact that Carnby can be equipped in Father Christmas.

Gameplay

Before starting, the player must choose to incarnate a man or a woman (Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood). A kinematics presents then its arrival to the haunted manor of Derceto, whereas the night starts to fall, then the character notes that it is locked up. The player is then invited to explore the manor in the search of an exit, but it is quickly attacked by supernatural enemies including/understanding Zombi S, Rat S, Géant S and other creatures much odder. However the combat plays only one partial part: there is for example only one dozen zombies in the whole of the play, and much of monsters are destroyed or circumvented by solving enigmas. It is then necessary to seek in the house the least small index to advance in the history, rather than to use the frontal attack. Accordingly, of many books and manuscripts scattered with the four corners of the house will help the hero to leave living trap.
