Regional natural park of Pilat

The regional natural park of the Pilat covers the major part of the mountainous solid mass of the same name, on the buttresses of the Massif Central. It culminates with the Crêt of the Partridge to 1432m of altitude and dominates the valley of the the Rhone in the South and the town of Saint-Etienne and the valley of the Gier in North.

The origin of the word Pilat is rather confused even if the bond with Pontius Pilate were evoked.

The solid mass of Pilat dominates the valleys of the the Rhone and the Gier. At the time Roman, water of Gier was used to feed Lyon thanks to the Aqueduc of Gier.

The regional natural park of Pilat covers a territory of 700 km ².

It is in the area the Rhone-Alps, with horse on the departments of the the Loire and the the Rhone.
