Regional natural park of Avesnois

The Regional natural park of Avesnois is a community (Mixed trade-union) created in March 1998, which extends on nearly 125000 Hectare S in the south to the Département to North. It gathers 129 communes (and 5 common partners), that is to say more than 130.000 inhabitants. Its project and the label " Parc" rest on a charter, renewable every 10 years.

Characteristics

It is one of the zones richest in Biodiversité of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais area, playing an important part of “tank” for the green Trame regional. Within the framework of the ecological Network paneuropéen, it is an intermediate zone between this area and the the Ardennes.

The Scrap-metal and the Forêt are the landscapes most characteristic of the park. The scrap-metal avesnois is characterized by hedges to some extent lower and fines that in the other regional scrap-metals (bolted) or French (Norman, Breton.). These hedges mainly consist of Aubépine S planted at the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, at the time where this area was the first apple supplier for the Parisian ones. The scrap-metal has been in regression in the northern part of the park for a few decades.

With 27.309 ha of forests (given 2000, source: PNR), is a rate of timbering of 17% Avesnois is under the most wooded area of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais. 2 forest under-areas there are distinguished: that of the primary Ardennes and that of Hainaut. The timbering of some zones of agricultural Déprise saved with the PNR 1.368 hectares of forest in more since 1974.

Les many meadows, and the calcicoles rich person lawns also contribute to its Biodiversité. On these last, one listed approximately 90 plant species threatened or protected .

It includes in particular the Oratoire S in Pierre blue, formerly extracted the basement of the area.

the House of the Park is installed since March 13rd 1998 in the “barn dîmière” of Maroilles, one of the old dependences of the Abbaye of Maroilles cheese, This renovated building is the head office of the PNR and contains a vast place of exposures and animation. It is also the Point environment council (PEC) of Avesnois.
