Regional Park of Scheutbos

The park of Scheutbos (of the Dutch " wood of pousses") is an green area of 6 hectares with vocation ecological and entertaining with Molenbeek-Saint-Jean near the Boulevard Louis Mettewie and managed by Brussels Environnement - IBGE, the institute of Brussels for the management of the environment. This space is a very beautiful corner of nature and, in spite of its name, is not any more one wood, but a waste land. The site was classified for its landscape qualities, historical, its blue and green grid, like for its large Biodiversité. The regional park evolves/moves with the passing of years: the hedges and the shrubs, planted or preserved, develop, the fruit trees high - stems bear fruits, the meadows grow rich by the arrival by new species the graminaceous ones and leguminous plants, with their long procession of flowers. The brook accommodates a fauna disappeared for a long time on this side of the site. In order to benefit from the attraction of the wetlands, a grating out of wooden was built: it makes it possible to cross the wet meadow before inaccessible and more directly to join the meadows close to the site. Small dams of reserve were also high to increase the surface of the floodplains further and to develop the presence of water. The park is maintained according to the principles differentiated management: the interventions, traditional and more frequent on the side of the traditional green area (shearings of the lawns-a hectare, sizes of the trees, the hedges and the shrubs, brushing of the coatings), are made conspicuous when one moves away from there. The meadows and the orchard are mown twice a year - more than three hectares, with safeguarding of certain surfaces (principles of concerning the nesting of the birds, the dispersion of seeds, interest of flowerings), the wetlands require a maintenance adapted to their vulnerability,… The site accommodates the House of Nature in an old farm which will accommodate the service écoconseil common and associations active on the ground (guidances by the Circle of the Naturalists of Belgium, education to the environment by the asbl Sunflower-Zonnebloem vzw.). On the initiative of the IBGE and horticultural Circle of the ground corners, a pilot experiment of integration of spaces cultivated with the urban public parks takes place in Scheutbos. 25 pieces were arranged for this purpose.

History

It is these heights apart 4 km of the Grand-Place that the French forces of Occupation, directed by the Maréchal of Villeroy bombarded Brussels during three days from August 11th to 13rd 1695.
