Regina is a commune located in the department of the Guyana.
Geography
Very vast commune of the littoral Is, which is inserted in the middle of the tropical forest in south-west. It is the second commune of France the most extended by its surface (1 213.000 hectares) after Maripasoula. The city is located on the edges of the river Approuague.On the commune, nearly 95.000 hectares of marsh are classified Natural reserve of Kaw since March 1998 and 100.000 other hectares belong to the Natural reserve of Nouragues. They belong both to recent the Regional natural park of Guyana.
It is as on the territory of Regina as is the old village of Guisanbourg and the village of Kaw (accessible in dugout).
The culminating point of Regina are the mounts Bakra (711 m).
History
- Vestiges of the dwelling Favard (XIXe century).
- Hamlet of Holy Spirit, place of worship since the XIXe century.
- Vestiges of the reserve of Nouragues, last Amerindian community, disappeared towards 1780: funeral urns, lithic tools, polishing machines, remains of pottery.
Regina holds her name of Louis Athanase Theophane Regina (1868 - 1922).
