Reggiane Re.2000

The Reggiane Re.2000 is a contemporary Italian hunter of the Macchi M.C.200 and FIAT G.50 Freccia, although more valid and more modern he was not any success in Italy but its qualities were recognized abroad.

Design

The originators of Re 2000 Roberto Longhi and Antonio Alessio were influenced by the stay of Longhi in the United States, and Re 2000 was very similar in its lines to the Seversky P-35 and adopted identical technical solutions, in particular the train with retraction of the wheels towards the back, neat on the aerodynamic level and balanced well it showed excellent characteristics, only weak point the engine lack reliability.

Other characteristics

The tanks of Re 2000 was located in the wings what brought the Italian persons in charge has to refuse it considering that made it too vulnerable for a hunter.

Its employment

Re 2000 was used in Italy only in one flotilla operating in Sicily between 1941 and 1942 and as an embarked plane.

The Hungary bought 70 specimens and built of them 192 pennies license, the Sweden bought 60 planes which remained on line until 1946.

After having tested the plane carefully the English placed order of 300 specimens in January 1940, order which was obviously cancelled with the entry in war of Italy ----
